The 5 Stages of Spring Break

Let’s face it: we all have mixed emotions when it comes to spring break, whether we’re facing the beginning of a week-long respite or at the tail end of it, returning to campus and resuming classes.

While some of us may have quite restful, relaxing breaks after spending much-needed time with friends and family at home, others may feel a little stressed out trying to catch up on homework assignments and studying for upcoming exams. And still, others may experience a combination of these, along with some other conflicting feelings about staying at home the entire time versus going out and being social.

If you are planning to spend most or all of spring break in the comfort of your own home, or have ever done so, you may relate to these five stages.

After Your Last Class

You are beyond excited to go home for spring break. After a rough couple of weeks filled with seemingly endless assignments, projects, quizzes, and — worst of all — midterms, there is nothing more you would love to do than to spend an entire week in your own house, away from your school campus, and temporarily forget about your troubles while vegging out and binge watching shows on Netflix.

The First Few Days

You’re finally home! Oh, how you’ve missed your bed. And the TV. And the sofa. And, of course, your mom’s home-cooked food. You spend most of your time sleeping in and catching up on all the shows that you missed while you were studying for midterms the weeks before. You eat meals with your family and lounge around the house in sweatpants. The homework that’s due at the end of the week couldn’t be farther from your mind. Life is great.

The Middle

Okay, now it’s time to go out. Let’s face the facts: you haven’t gone outside in the past two or three days, and even your mom is starting to nag you to get out of the house. You frantically text your friends to set up plans for the remainder of the week and end up feeling accomplished for being such a proactively social human being. Your calendar is so full now that you may have even forgotten to think about when you’ll have time to do schoolwork.

The Last Few Days

You’re exhausted. You had fun, ate a lot of great food, and hung out with your friends, but boy, there’s only so much traveling and socializing you can take all at once. You’re going to collapse on the couch, grab the TV remote, and spend the rest of your days parked here on the –

Wait. There was something else you had to do.

Your heart sinks, and you groan as you remember all the assignments you have to do by the end of the break.

The Last Day

You’re kind of dying as you do your best to cram all of the work you have left into this one day, although at the same time there’s a little devil on your shoulder whispering that you should enjoy the last day of break as much as possible. Somehow you manage to finish most of your work before heading back to campus, but there’s still that little bit left hanging like a rain cloud over your head.

When you finally get back to your dorm room, you spend the next few hours struggling to finish everything. By midnight, you’re done. You sit back in your chair, wipe your forehead, and sigh in relief.

“Man, that was stressful,” you say. “I’m ready for another break.”
